BAHA's Physical and Mental Health Awareness Day
In conjunction with the Houston Community College System’s African American Studies Program, the Bay Area Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted its annual Physical and Mental Health Awareness Day on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at the Learning Hub at Houston Community College's Southeast Campus, 6815 Rustic Avenue, Houston, TX 77087. The event, was titled “Physical & Mental Health Awareness Day: Building Healthy Communities,” and it focused on health issues affecting African Americans. This event was in alignment with our Founders’ vision to promote physical and mental health among our membership as well as our surrounding communities.
The purpose of BAHA’s Physical and Mental Health Awareness Day was to bridge the gap that often exists between health care professionals and the public. Some members of the community seek medical diagnosis, treatment and support on an infrequent basis; therefore, our objective was to have a positive impact by sharing information that might lead to improved health behaviors as well as more healthy lifestyles.
This event featured two panels: Panel 1 Physical Health/Chronic Conditions/ Nutrition & Panel 2 Mental Health, a Domestic Violence presentation, as well as 18 agencies and vendors including the Rho Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi’s UTMB Blood Blank. With both the Red Cross Bone Marrow Center and the Blood Bank, attendees were able to be tested and donate blood. The agencies/vendors were located in an adjoining area to the panel and presentation location. This allowed the attendees to move about the event freely. Snacks during the event (i.e. fruit, sandwiches, chips, snack bars, water and juice) were provided. As a result of our endeavors, Bay Area Houston Alumna Chapter was acknowledged by the City of Houston and received a Proclamation from the City at the February 15, 2011 City Council Meeting.
BAHA’s Physical and Mental Health Awareness Day is held annually during the month of February.
Go Red for Women Luncheon
The purpose of the Go Red for Women Luncheon was to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of heart attacks and the risk factors associated with heart disease. To increase awareness to the Bay Area Houston community about the prevalence of heart disease in African-American women, our own chapter member, who underwent open heart surgery, was the guest speaker. Information about risks and ways to prevent heart disease were distributed to the luncheon attendees. Chapter members wore red on “Go Red for Women Day” and encouraged others to wear red as well.
‘Go Red for Women’ is in collaboration with the American Heart Association and is celebrated the 1st Friday in February.
